AARP and Walgreens have announced a two-year, national mobile health screening tour called The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour, which kicks off on April 14, 2009 in Rockefeller Plaza, NYC. The nationwide tour will deliver free health screenings and health education to people in hundreds of communities, with a special emphasis on underserved areas.
- Nine customized, traveling education and health-screening buses will travel across the 48 continental United States and Puerto Rico to deliver six critical screenings to consumers: cholesterol levels, blood pressure, bone density, blood glucose levels, waist circumference and body composition/body mass index.
- Over a $140 value per patient who receives all six screenings
- One of the nine buses is solely dedicated to Puerto Rico and is called the AARP/Walgreens La Gira Del Buen Vecino.
- The buses will stop in more than 3,000 communities and 300 cities over the next two years.
The Wellness Tour has a goal to deliver more than 2.5 million free health screenings for early detection and prevention of diseases, with a value of over $60 million.
- Both AARP and Walgreens are focused on improving the overall health and quality of life in communities across the nation. Many diseases can be detected long before symptoms are even noticed and obviously early detection is the key to staying healthy. With AARP’s help, Walgreens will be more effective in providing these free health screenings to the people who are most in need of affordable healthcare.
- Walgreens has teamed up with AARP to bring to life the goal of both organizations and make wellness and health services available to AARP members and the communities Walgreens serves. Overall, the tour will provide:
- Health screenings for early detection and prevention of diseases.
- Opportunities to learn more about AARP membership; AARP health materials; and information on the “Wise Use of Medicines” program, which educates consumers on prescription uses and management.
- A crew of six on each bus, provided by Walgreens, who are all certified medical technicians.
- Free one-year AARP memberships will be made available (in the form of a brochure with a membership application) to participants who receive the health screening. The free membership offer applies to both new and existing AARP members. Existing members will get a one-year extension to their membership. In all cases , the free membership must be activated by filling out and mailing the postage-paid application on the brochure.
- To find out more information about the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour, visit www.aarpwalgreens.com/tour or call 1-866-484-TOUR.
- Screenings take between 20-25 minutes depending on the wait, and visitors will receive results immediately after going through the bus. After receiving results, visitors are encouraged to see their doctor regarding any concerns; or visitors may also wish to speak to their local Walgreens pharmacist.
